I read this book after seeing a reference to it on fb... Loved it... although an adult I have read many YA titles and this is a good one... it reminded me of the books of Tamora Pierce... and authors in that genre.. I would recommend it.... a good read..Product details

I received this book from Library Thing and it is an amazing book. I recommend this book to anyone who loves to read about magic, I couldn't put it down.

Toren the Apprentice's Tale Book one was a great magical story. It is a great book for both young adults even middle grade children to adults. I am in my 30's and really enjoyed it. If you like magic and adventure you will love it.
This was the start of a great new epic journey and I can't wait to read the next part! I was hooked from the very beginning and enjoyed all the tales that were told throughout the book. I was reminded of stories that I used to love reading when I was younger and I feel that the author really has a great talent for storytelling.
I'd give 3.5 stars if I could, but I'm rounding up. The author is somewhat prone to infodumps, and the main character is a little Mary Sue-ish, but the story held my attention throughout.
The main character has many adventures as she discovers her powers and learns to use them, some more improbable than others (see above regarding Mary Sue-ishness), but they're all well told, with solid world-building.
Toren doesn't want to be a wizard, she's a story teller but her brother sells her to Bender, a wizard, to act as his apprentice. Only boys can be wizards, so she gets a haircut and has to pretend. Her first adventure is a camp for story tellers to learn more about the craft.
Going by the name Tor she also attends the wizard school for boys in Midrosh for a year. There a dragon chose her for a life-long friend and she defeats the evil wizard Mordek leaving her with a bad leg and a boy named Romach determined to kill the person he knows as Tor. She believes Mordek will return someday, so she studies and practices until she is even teaching the wizard, Bender. Toren yearns to be reunited with her family. Will she stay and complete her obligation?
Shevi Arnold is a talented writer and I'm glad to know this is part of a series.

After 10 year old Toren's parent die, her brother wants to get an apprenticeship to leave the vineyard. Instead he ends up selling Toren to be a wizard's apprentice. Since wizard's are all men, Toren must look and act like a boy. We are taken through her lessons and adventures for the first 2 years of the 7 she is expected to serve.
I liked the story, even if I'm a bit older than the intended target age. It's a sweet story for tweens about courage and perseverance.
The story's ending was rather abrupt, but it left you wanting to read book 2 in the series.
